When I first started taking photography classes, I shot with natural light. About three classes into my training, I decided to take a studio lighting class. I was fascinated and wanted to learn more. The studio lighting class completely demystified lighting for me. It was with that class I really started to understand what my instructors meant when they would tell us to “look for the light”.
I am still primarily a natural light shooter. I like the challenge of learning how to work with what you have and making it look great. But, lately, I hear the call of the strobe…beckoning me to give it a fair shake. I think I am going to do it. I found a wonderful website and Flickr group a few months ago where the author/photog walks you through all kinds of lighting set ups. Talk about information overload! One of my goals with learning to work with strobes is I will be able to shoot for my clients in all kinds of lighting situations and do some cool experiemental night shooting. That is what I love about photography. There are no mistakes, only lessons.
