Conversations I have had through email range from angry, humorous, serious and deeply passionate. I communicate through electronically just as I do in person. My words are genuinely authentic which helps me have an emotional connection to the person I am communicating with.
I’ve made passionate pleas to friends to not make dumb mistakes they will regret later. I have poured my heart out to someone I loved and had them have no visible reaction. Through the written word, I have shared my dreams and hopes for my future. I’ve used my email to record my inspirations, creative sparks and my master plan for world domination.
Have I sent messages I later wished I had not? Absolutely, only it might surprise you that the ones I regret sending are the ones where I was not speaking my truth. I have no regrets over any messages that I have sent that were honest and heartfelt. No, not one single one. It is when I allow myself to be vulnerable, authentic and real that the essence of who I am comes through my words. Whether we are chatting online or in person, what you see and hear from me is consistently real. It is so easy these days to create fake, false personas and hide behind them when you are online. It is when dealing with people in real life that the lies become difficult to live up to and defend.
Responsibility and ownership does not change because you choose to communicate online versus offline. Words have power in any medium. Thing is, when it is electronic, it lives on forever. Hurtful words retain their sting and loving words can still stir passion and deep love. How are you choosing to use your words? Are you going to tear people down or lift them up? The choice is always yours.
